The Aix-en-Provence Basecamp
Strategic planning for using Aix as your central hub.
Why We Choose Aix
When planning a trip to Provence, many campers default to the coast or deep into the Luberon. While beautiful, these areas suffer from extreme traffic bottlenecks and isolation. Aix-en-Provence provides the perfect logistical middle ground. It sits directly on major highway arteries (A8, A51), allowing you to bypass the worst of the regional traffic while remaining under an hour from major landmarks.
Day Trip Logistics from Aix
The Calanques & Marseille
Drive time: 45 minutes.
Tip: Leave Aix by 7:30 AM to secure motorhome parking at the Cassis P+R or the Luminy university gates before the crowds arrive.
The Luberon Villages
Drive time: 50 minutes.
Tip: Head north via the D9. Focus on Gordes and Roussillon in the morning, and Lourmarin in the afternoon on your way back to camp.
Provisioning Your Camp
One of the biggest advantages of an Aix base is access to supplies. For fresh food, the daily markets in the city center are unparalleled. For practical camping gear, you have immediate access to large commercial zones just outside the city center (like Les Milles), which host major outdoor retailers like Decathlon, hardware stores, and large supermarkets with dedicated campervan fuel and service stations.
Parking Rules for Aix
- Do not enter the historic ring road (Boulevard périphérique) with a Class A or Coach-built motorhome. The roads narrow quickly and parking structures are strictly height-limited (often 1.9m).
- Use the P+R (Parc Relais): The Krypton P+R is the largest, but check your vehicle height. For taller vehicles, the open-air sections of Plan d'Aillane or parking at designated campsites on the city outskirts is required.
- Public Transport: Aix has a highly efficient local bus network (Aix en Bus) that connects all major peripheral campsites directly to the Rotonde (city center).
